What Size Forklift Do I Need? Understanding Capacity & Load Centre
Choosing the right forklift involves more than simply matching the truck’s rated capacity to the weight of your load. Load weight, dimensions, load centre, lift height, attachments, aisle space, and operating environment all play an important role in selecting the correct forklift.
A forklift rated at 5,000 lb at a 24-inch load centre does not necessarily have the capacity to safely lift every 5,000 lb load. Longer or unusually shaped loads move the load centre farther away from the forklift, which can reduce its available lifting capacity. Capacity may also decrease at higher lift heights or when attachments such as fork positioners, clamps, or extended forks are installed.
Before selecting a forklift, consider your maximum load weight and dimensions, required lift height, aisle width, door clearances, indoor or outdoor use, and daily operating hours. Choosing the right specifications improves safety, productivity, and equipment life.
